STATEMENT: “a hiding place”

a/ˈhīdiNG/plās/ — a space of reckoning, a temporary shelter from external threat or danger

We are sheltered in walls in cities and in homes. These walls shield us like a hiding place, providing retreat from the outer world. They can also be subject to invasion, erosion. In this series, I painted reinterpretations of decaying walled facades in a post-industrial landscape from memory and experience. I wanted to explore the histories of human interactions within these walls like transitory records, giving the illusion that walled spaces protect us, when in reality even the sturdiest of walls do not last. I was most interested in the many metaphors implied by walls in relation to vulnerability: “walling something in” protects or conceals, whereas “letting your walls down” exposes truth.
